First Decade of 21st Century 4-20-13

Hi! I’m futurist David Houle.

On January 1st, 2010, I named the 2010 to 2020 decade as the Transformation Decade. The dictionary definition of transformation is a change in nature, shape, character, and form which means this is the decade when humanity’s thinking and most of its institutions have then changed their nature, shape, character, and form.

Now, what this also means is that it’s the first decade of 21st century thought. Why? Because humanity has powered into this century, the 21st century, with the legacy thinking of the 20th. You can see it everywhere.

Finally, in this decade, that legacy thinking of the 20th century will fall away. An example would be if I say 20th century to you, whatever comes to mind, American Century, Century of Science, Century of World War, really began in the second decade, particularly 1914 to 1918.

Obviously, World War I, Russian Revolution, General Theory of Relativity, the map of Europe as we know it today was largely set. Unfortunately, the map of the Middle East was setup then. As we look at all the stories of the last hundred years, they really began with the second decade of the 20th century.

I think future historians are going to look back at the Transformation Decade, 2010 to 2020, as the first decade when humanity really started to think 21st century thought. That’s why it’s such an exciting and transformative time.
