Crew Help Requested!
In the more than 10 years I have been writing this blog, I have never asked for a favor, nor really promoted anything as that is not what this column is or should be about. That said, I am asking for a favor, and an immediate one at that.
Six months ago I co-founded a global non-profit This Spaceship Earth. This came from co-authoring, with planetary ethicist Tim Rumage, the book of the same name that was published last December. Once the book came out the response – that it helped readers better understand climate change and what they could do- led us to decide that we had to do something more. So six months ago we launched This Spaceship Earth, the goal being to create Crew Consciousness.
The guiding quote for us is from Marshall McLuhan:
“There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew”
We all live on Spaceship Earth, a spaceship that, unlike any you might think about, has no incoming resupply. There are finite resources yet we act as though resources are unlimited. In 2015 humanity consumed 1.6 planet’s earth’s worth of resources, meaning that the amount of resources humanity used in a year would take 18 months to be regenerated. It is unfathomable to think about a prolonged mission of a spaceship with the finite resources on board being over consumed by 60%.
The mission of This Spaceship Earth is:
“To bring about a new global consciousness in how we think and interact with the finite resources on this planet through education, global awareness, and empowerment of individuals, communities and companies”
We are headquartered in Sarasota FL where there is a wonderful event staged by several foundations. Called the Giving Challenge it allows an approved non-profit to receive donations from $25-100 within a 24 hour period and all donations will be TRIPLED. I am writing to ask for your participation. I wrote a column about it in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
The two leading foundations involved, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, and the Patterson Foundation believe that a very active community of donors creates a more cohesive society. As a futurist I think this is one of the great models for communities going forward at a time when we have ever less trust in the government at all levels to provide for the citizenry.
So here is my request:
If you have gone to our web site and support our mission then making a $25-100 donation during the 24 hour period 12 noon eastern today, Tuesday 9/20 to 12 noon eastern on Wednesday 9/21 will result in your tax deductible donation being tripled to us.
