The Physical Reality and the Screen Reality
During the last 10 years I have consistently spoken about the two realities we live in; the physical reality and the screen reality. The physical reality is of course based upon atoms and the screen reality is based upon digits. During this time it has become clear that the screen reality morphs more quickly than the physical reality in part because of this. The screen reality of Amazon.com has completely altered the physical retail reality.
This dynamic will continue. We must understand that all the issues around this duality that have been obsessively discussed- device addiction, lack of concentration, obliviousness to our physical reality as we stare at hand held screens- is all because it has only been in the last 15 years that this duality has existed in human history. It is a new integration for humans. How we do this to some degree reflects our personalities. Prior to that we had the physical reality and limited communications devices to use for talking and texting.
To take this duality out the next 20 years, the screen reality will be most affected by machine learning and our physical reality will be most affected by climate change.
